A limited launch of Flipkart food delivery is being prepared for India within the next few weeks, according to Flipkart Group Chief Executive Officer Kalyan Krishnamurthy. The planned service is being positioned as the Walmart-owned e-commerce company's entry into a market currently led by Eternal Limited-owned Zomato and Swiggy Limited. A controlled rollout is being prioritised before a broader expansion is considered.
The launch strategy is being modelled around the phased approach previously used for Flipkart Minutes, the company's quick-commerce service. Krishnamurthy told Moneycontrol that the initial version would be tested with a restricted group of customers before wider expansion was undertaken. Feedback would be gathered, the proposition refined and broader availability pursued only after sufficient customer appeal had been established. He also confirmed that the service would be offered through both a dedicated food delivery application and the main Flipkart app, although the proposed brand name, first launch city and detailed operational model were not disclosed.
A differentiated customer proposition has been identified as the central objective of the planned launch. According to Krishnamurthy, value would be delivered through restaurant assortment, service quality, operational reliability and the overall ordering experience rather than pricing alone. A broader food catalogue would gradually be built to meet customer expectations as the service expands. Flipkart's entry also comes as new food delivery models are being introduced across the market, including Rapido's Ownly and Swiggy's Toing, increasing competition across pricing, restaurant partnerships and customer experience.
A nationwide rollout will not be undertaken immediately, according to the strategy outlined by Krishnamurthy. Expansion will be considered only after the product has been tested, customer expectations have been understood and improvements have been introduced. Meanwhile, Eternal Limited founder Deepinder Goyal has previously stated that long-term innovation in the sector is more likely to emerge from supply-side initiatives than discount-driven models. Flipkart's position in the category will ultimately depend on its ability to deliver a reliable and differentiated food delivery experience as it scales across India.
